Where young talent and smart mobility come together. RDW facilitates the competition and provides the participating educational institutions with the necessary hardware, software and technical guidance.
RDW organises the challenge to gain knowledge about the complexity of autonomous vehicles and how these vehicles make choices. This helps RDW, whose tasks include approving cars for use on public roads, to prepare for a future in which self-driving cars will play an increasingly important role.
The challenge's ambition is to use other vehicles and techniques besides the factory class kart, and to let this project grow into a global challenge across three continents. The Self Driving Challenge is - in addition to RDW's many other initiatives and collaborations in the field of smart mobility - an innovative way to gather knowledge about self-driving vehicles.
The challenge is also an opportunity for RDW to profile itself as an attractive employer for young talented people.
We have 10 student teams participating in the RDW Self Driving Challenge 2026! Divided between the Open and Closed categories, these teams are ready to take on the challenge of a lifetime. The excitement is building, and we can’t wait to see which bright minds will elevate the future of autonomous driving to the next level!
